Identified Civil War Bullseye Canteen
Andrew Boyer – Company F, 57th Pennsylvania Infantry
Dated October 18, 1861
Gettysburg Veteran – on Monument
Classic Federal “bullseye” pattern smooth-side canteen bearing a hand-painted period inscription reading:
“A. BOYER Co. F 57th Regt. Oct. 18, 1861”
Andrew Boyer, age 25, a blacksmith from Mercer County, Pennsylvania, enlisted on September 23, 1861 at Mercer and mustered into Company F, 57th Pennsylvania Infantry on October 30, 1861. The October 18 date on the canteen falls precisely within the organization period of the regiment, making this an especially desirable early-war example.
The 57th Pennsylvania Infantry served with distinction in the Army of the Potomac and later in the Army of the James, seeing heavy combat at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (attached to III Corps during the Peach Orchard fighting), the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. The regiment sustained severe casualties throughout its service.
Boyer was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on March 15, 1864, and later discharged, suggesting wounds, illness, or physical disability incurred during active campaigning — a common fate among long-serving soldiers of the regiment.
The canteen exhibits strong period surface with oxidized patina, concentric ring “bullseye” form, and visible age consistent with field service. Clearly inscribed and solidly identified Pennsylvania infantry material from a hard-fighting Gettysburg regiment.
A desirable named and dated Army of the Potomac canteen with strong research potential and direct battlefield association.
