Identified Gettysburg Fatality CDV – Private John Dover, 5th Michigan Infantry

A compelling Civil War carte de visite depicting a young Union infantryman armed with a musket, a straightforward seated pose with period attire and accoutrements often seen with early-war volunteer imagery. The image carries a subdued, almost haunting quality, further strengthened by a period pencil identification on the reverse.

The subject is identified as John Dover, a Michigan soldier who enlisted on March 3, 1863, at Imlay, Michigan, entering service as a private and mustered as a substitute. Like many substitutes of 1863, Dover was rapidly absorbed into the ranks and sent into active service during one of the war’s most critical campaigns.

His service was tragically brief. Dover was killed in action on July 2, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg, during the brutal second day’s fighting—when Union and Confederate forces clashed violently across locations such as the Wheatfield, Peach Orchard, and Cemetery Ridge. As a newly enlisted substitute, his experience reflects the harsh reality faced by late-war recruits who were often thrown directly into heavy combat with little time for acclimation.

He now rests among the honored dead at Gettysburg National Cemetery, a burial reserved for Union soldiers who fell in the battle and its immediate aftermath. A casualty of one of the defining moments of the American Civil War. A life cut short in the crucible of Gettysburg.

The photograph itself shows honest age and wear, consistent with period handling, while the clarity of the soldier’s form and weapon remains intact.
