Identified U.S. Cartridge Box with CDV Image of the Soldier
Carried by Pvt. John A. Chadwick, Co. D, 9th Maine Vol. Infantry. Chadwick enlisted on September 22nd, 1861. The 9th Maine was brigaded with Col. Robert Gould Shaw’s 54th Mass. Vol. Regt. during the coastal South Carolina campaign. He was wounded at Battery Wagner SC. on July 18th, 1863 but re-enlisted when his term was up on Jan.lst, 1864.
Unfortunately, Chadwick was severely wounded at the Battle of Deep Bottom VA. where he lost a leg. He was discharged on account of this wounding on Jan. 20, 1865. The cartridge box is in very good condition and was presumably with Chadwick when he was wounded. Chadwick’s name is clearly written inside the outer flap. Maker marked “J.B. THAXTER/PORTLAND ME.”. Both cartridge tins are present, as well as both roller strap buckles, and latch tab. Included with the box is Chadwick’s signed CDV with Belfast, Maine studio mark and a copy of his application for an artificial leg.
