Identified Union Officer Tintype

Lt. Col. William C. Rhodes, 30th Illinois Infantry

A compelling and fully identified Civil War ambrotype portrait of Lt. Col. William C. Rhodes of the 30th Illinois Infantry, presented in a period thermoplastic (Union) case. Rhodes enlisted in October 1862 and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel by June 1863, serving through to the close of the war in July 1865. His regiment saw extensive service in the Western Theater, including major campaigns in Tennessee and Georgia.

The image depicts Rhodes in uniform, seated with clear presentation of his military bearing. The ambrotype remains well-preserved with strong contrast and detail, housed in an ornate gilt mat and accompanied by its original case. The case interior retains its decorative velvet pad, with period pencil inscriptions attesting to his identification.  Accompanying the piece is a handwritten identification and modern research confirming Rhodes’ service record.  This one will not last long!

William C. Rhodes: Residence Nilwood, IL. Enlisted on 10/8/1862 as a Private. On 10/8/1862, he was commissioned into Field & Staff Illinois 30th Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 7/17/1865 at Louisville, KY. Promotions: Lt Colonel 6/13/1863.
