Impressive Civil War Colonel of Infantry Shoulder Strap — Double Border 

 

A superb single Civil War colonel of infantry shoulder strap, featuring a dark blue field surrounded by an impressive double border of heavy gold bullion. 

 

The centerpiece is the regulation colonel’s eagle, exceptionally well executed in raised bullion embroidery. The eagle displays remarkable detail throughout the wings, body, head, shield, and surrounding elements, with the extensive hand embroidery giving the device an almost sculptural appearance. This is clearly a high-quality, privately purchased example made for a senior field officer. 

 

The broad double bullion border further distinguishes the strap, with tightly laid herringbone-pattern embroidery creating a substantial and visually impressive frame around the dark infantry field. The gold has developed a pleasing age patina while retaining excellent definition. 

 

Although preserved as a single shoulder strap, the quality of the eagle alone makes this an outstanding example. Colonel’s insignia represents one of the highest field-officer ranks encountered during the Civil War, and this unusually elaborate double-border example with its magnificent embroidered eagle is particularly striking.
