Description
Leather Wallet (Dated 1846)
This well-preserved leather billfold or document wallet features a fold-over flap closure. Crafted from richly patinated leather, it was likely used to store important papers, currency, or correspondence. Inside, the wallet bears a beautiful period ink inscription: “Edwin B. Thomas, 1846, Property, Smithfield, R.I.” This personal marking not only dates the piece but also connects it to its original owner, offering a tangible link to everyday life in pre-Civil War America. An excellent example of early American leatherwork with both functional and historical appeal.
