Description

Major General Daniel E. Sickles — Fredricks & Co. CDV

Excellent wartime carte-de-visite of Major General Daniel E. Sickles (1819–1914), shown in uniform with his distinctive mustache and major general’s shoulder straps. Period pencil identification below the image reads “Gen. Sickles.” The reverse bears the C. D. Fredricks & Co., 587 Broadway, New York photographer’s imprint.

One of the Civil War’s most colorful and controversial generals, Sickles commanded the III Corps at Gettysburg, where on July 2, 1863, he advanced his corps from its assigned position to the Peach Orchard salient. The ensuing Confederate assault shattered the III Corps, and Sickles was struck by a cannonball that necessitated the amputation of his right leg.

One of the finest views we have offered of this Gettysburg personality, a strong military portrait, period identification, and excellent photographer. The image retains pleasing contrast with light, honest age toning to the mount.
