Description

Massachusetts Model 1808 Percussion Conversion

Early Model 1808 musket converted to percussion ignition and marked for the State of Massachusetts.

The lock is marked Sutton 1812 and the barrel bears U.S., MS, and PM markings near the breech. The stock also retains Massachusetts state markings opposite the lock. Steel components display a deep plum patina while the musket retains its original button‑tipped ramrod and both sling swivels. Early state‑marked muskets such as this were often retained in militia inventories for decades and later saw service again during the Civil War.

Early state-associated U.S. muskets such as the Model 1808 conversions tell the story of long-lived militia arms that remained useful across several generations. Originally produced in the early republic, many were altered and retained well into the Civil War era, particularly in local or reserve service. Their survival underscores just how broad the demand for serviceable arms became when war came in 1861.
