Description

Mexican War Era Small “U.S.” Belt Plate on White Buff Leather Belt

Fine example of a Mexican War period small pattern “U.S.” oval belt plate mounted on its original white buff leather waist belt. This early form predates the larger Civil War issue plates, representing the transitional accoutrements used by regulars and volunteers during the 1840s.

The plate retains a pleasing, untouched patina with well-defined “U.S.” lettering, properly mounted to the narrow buff leather belt. The belt itself, originally whitened for parade and dress use, has toned naturally over time to a soft, mellow surface while still showing its characteristic buff finish. The construction—thin profile, narrow width, and simple keeper—aligns with pre-Civil War manufacture.

White buff leather belts were a staple of U.S. infantry equipment during the Mexican War, worn as part of the formal and campaign dress, though few survive today intact due to heavy use, cleaning, and the inherent fragility of the material. Most encountered examples are separated from their original plates or have been altered postwar, making a complete and untouched pairing increasingly scarce.

An attractive and honest early U.S. accoutrement, firmly rooted in the Mexican War period and representing the foundation of later Civil War equipment patterns.
