Militia Officer’s Sword
Circa 1840-1850
Theis attractive sword features its original fluted bone grip that has a nice orange hue. The hilt features a decorative knight’s head pommel, ornate hand guard, quillion, and double-sided “Shell” chappe with enhanced designs. The fittings are all brass and bear few blemishes or patina issues, and still have a lot of the original gilding present.
The blade is plain, likely to be a product made by the esteemed William H. Horstmann of Philadelphia, or by Ames, who was responsible for producing a great number of swords in America during that time. The tip of the blade is blunted.
The original brass scabbard mounts exhibits a few noticeable dents, but it does not interfere with the sword going in or out. The scabbard retains its stud and hanger ring for mounting to a belt. A very nice example as seen used in the Mexican American War and on both sides of the Civil War.
