Description
Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber – Horstmann, Philadelphia
Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber marked “HORSTMANN PHILA.”, accompanied by a steel scabbard. The broad, flat-backed curved blade exhibits a gray surface with scattered darker patina, complemented by the mellow aged tones of the brass guard and pommel.
The Horstmann marking appears on the left ricasso near the guard. A wedge-shaped tool mark is visible on the right ricasso, with no additional manufacturer’s marking discernible on that side.
The brass guard and pommel cap retain an attractive yellowish to light brown patina. The wooden grip preserves much of its original leather covering, with the twisted-wire wrapping still in place. The oval leather washer at the junction of the blade and guard remains intact and solid.
The accompanying steel scabbard displays a dark brown patina, with two crimping dents approximately two inches above the drag.
An appealing Horstmann-marked heavy cavalry saber with retained original grip materials, pleasing aged surfaces, and strong display character.
