Description

Model 1842 .69 Caliber Springfield Smoothbore Musket

U.S. Model 1842 .69 caliber percussion smoothbore musket manufactured at the Springfield Armory in 1845. The steel components display a pleasing dark-brown patina, with the exception of the replacement trumpet-tipped ramrod and nipple cone, which retain a bright silver-gray appearance.

The lockplate is marked with an eagle and “U.S.” beneath the bolster, with “Springfield” and the 1845 date at the rear. The lock remains in full working order, and the hammer securely holds at both half and full cock. The angled left side of the barrel breech bears an eagle-head inspector’s mark and “V/P” viewed-and-proofed stamps. The “U.S.” marking on the top of the buttplate remains visible.

The front sling swivel is broken, and the barrel has been shortened approximately three-quarters of an inch at the muzzle. The underlug for the bayonet remains in place. The stock is solid, showing only scattered minor dings and scratches consistent with age and use. No visible inspector’s marks or carvings are present in the wood.

The top of the barrel breech exhibits some period pitting caused by the corrosive percussion caps used during its service life. Overall, an attractive Model 1842 Springfield musket with strong markings and an appealing, honest patina.
