Model 1842 Springfield U.S. Infantry Musket
$1,950.00
Description
Model 1842 Springfield U.S. Infantry Musket
U.S. Model 1842 Springfield smoothbore musket, one of the most important transitional infantry arms of the mid‑19th century. The lock is dated 1849, and the musket remains in .69 caliber smoothbore configuration.
The Model 1842 holds a significant place in American military history as the first standard U.S. military musket manufactured entirely with interchangeable parts, marking a major advancement in industrial arms production. Produced primarily at Springfield Armory and Harpers Ferry, these muskets represented the culmination of the flintlock-era musket design just prior to the widespread adoption of percussion ignition.
Many Model 1842 muskets were later rifled and converted for the use of the Minié ball during the Civil War. However, examples that remain in their original smoothbore configuration provide a valuable glimpse into pre-war military arms technology.
This example displays a rich, untouched dark patina across the metal surfaces, with the ramrod showing a matching aged finish. The sling swivels were removed at the armory, a modification occasionally encountered on arsenal-maintained arms.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, thousands of Model 1842 muskets were issued to both Union and Confederate troops, particularly early in the conflict when more modern rifled muskets were in short supply.
The Model 1842 occupies a key position in American military small-arms development. It was the first standard U.S. musket produced completely by machine methods with fully interchangeable parts, and it bridged the gap between the old smoothbore infantry arm and the later rifled musket that would dominate Civil War battlefields. Well-preserved examples remain especially desirable because they show the robust, utilitarian lines of the antebellum Federal musket just before the revolution in military rifled arms.
