Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword
Classic Civil War Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer’s sword, the regulation pattern carried by Union officers serving in staff or field grade positions.
This example features the distinctive cast brass hilt with pierced floral guard and scrolling quillon, retaining an appealing, untouched patina. The grip is wrapped and wire-bound, showing honest period wear consistent with age and handling. The blade is housed in its original metal scabbard with suspension rings intact. The blade is unmarked but featured a classic C. Roby style engraving with fancy letters “U.S.” and an eagle as well as floral scrolls.
Adopted in 1850 and widely carried throughout the Civil War, this elegant pattern sword was typically worn by officers of infantry, artillery, and cavalry serving in staff capacities, as well as field-grade officers. Its refined, lighter profile reflects its role as a regulation dress and service sidearm rather than a heavy combat saber.
An essential and iconic officer’s pattern for any serious Civil War edged weapons collection.
