A solid example of the classic Model 1858 smoothside Federal canteen, complete with its original wool cover and a well-worn soldier-carried look. This canteen retains its full–form body with the desirable smoothside construction, favored by many collectors for its early-war quality and handsome profile.

 

The wool cover remains intact with typical field wear, staining, and age toning consistent with long service life. The original linen sling survives in fragmentary but present condition, adding authenticity and character.

 

Most notably, the spout is initialed “FWC”, a wonderful personal touch that firmly ties this piece to an individual soldier. The other sling retention mounts bear light carving as well and always elevate an otherwise standard canteen.
