A fine early-war example of the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, manufactured by Ames in 1861 and associated with a Gettysburg collection. This iconic pattern served as the standard Union cavalry saber throughout the Civil War, prized for its balance and effectiveness in mounted service.
The blade retains a deep, even dark brown patina, indicative of age and honest use. The right ricasso is stamped with inspector’s initials, partially struck through, with “U.S.” and the date 1861 clearly present below, confirming government acceptance. The left side of the blade is unmarked. The overall surface shows consistent wear without significant damage, maintaining a strong and appealing presentation.

The brass guard and pommel exhibit a rich, mellow patina, with traces of old black finish visible in protected areas. The pommel cap bears the inspector’s initials “A.D.K.,” identifying inspection associated with Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The grip shows heavy service wear, with the original leather covering now absent; however, the twisted wire wrap remains intact, preserving the saber’s structural integrity and wartime character.

The steel scabbard presents with a deep, untouched brown patina, showing only minor superficial dings from field use. Both suspension rings remain intact. A small period hole is present near the drag, measuring approximately 4 mm by 2 mm, consistent with long service rather than modern damage.

Overall, this is a solid and honest example of an early Model 1860 cavalry saber, exhibiting clear markings, desirable Ames manufacture, and strong Gettysburg association.
