Musician Sword – Rare Mexican War Dated 

 

The model 1840 musician sword was intended for musicians and were ceremonial in purpose, being worn by the musicians during drill and formations.  The sword could be used in a fight, but only as a weapon of last resort. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company, Cabotville, Massachusetts.  Marks: ricasso, MADE BY / AMES MFG CO. / Cabotville / MASS. (banner style), and US / (inspector) / 1847, additional inspector stamp on pommel.  Standard features include a brass handle, the grip gives the appearance of wire wrap but its integral with the handle, guard is made from two plates unadorned, hilt is single branch. The leather scabbard is present with no repairs, the brass upper mount and drag are present with matching patina.  The top mount bears a museum inventory marking painted on it which matches the same on the guard.  The drag has inspector’s markings.  A scarce example!
