Description
Non-Excavated 12-Pound Confederate Cannonball with Original Fuse Components
Non-Excavated 12-Pound Confederate Cannonball with Original Fuse Components. An exceptional, non-dug Confederate 12-pound solid shot retaining its original wood plug fuse, adapter, and a remarkably well-preserved paper time fuse. The iron surface is smooth, with no pitting or corrosion, exhibiting only a light natural patina from age. The survival of all original components together—particularly the fragile paper fuse—makes this an exceedingly rare artifact. This example is virtually impossible to improve upon in terms of condition and completeness. Such cannonballs were commonly employed in Confederate field artillery, with the wooden plug and adapter designed to accept paper time fuses cut to ignite upon discharge. To find one in this state, fully intact and non-excavated, is an extraordinary occurrence. A museum-grade specimen for the advanced artillery or Confederate ordnance collector.
