Oliver Otis Howard Clipped Signature

Autograph of Major General Oliver O. Howard, U.S.A.

Original handwritten autograph signed “O. O. Howard / Maj-Genl U.S.A.”, attributed to Major General Oliver Otis Howard, one of the most prominent Union officers of the American Civil War.

Howard served with distinction throughout the war, commanding at First Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and later leading the Army of the Tennessee under General Sherman during the Atlanta Campaign and March to the Sea. Following the war, he became the first commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau and later founded Howard University, cementing his legacy beyond the battlefield.

The bold, period ink inscription displays strong, confident penmanship consistent with known examples of Howard’s autograph. A desirable piece linking directly to a senior Union general and an influential figure in both Civil War military history and Reconstruction-era America.

An excellent addition to any advanced Civil War autograph, manuscript, or Union general collection.
