Description
Original Civil War–Era Pocket Book: The Proverbs, Dated 1862–1863
A personal Civil War–period religious keepsake: an original pocket-size edition of The Proverbs, published during the war years and dated 1862, retaining a period handwritten presentation on the front blank page.
The inscription reads:
“To my son,
J. Butler Merwin from his Mother
1863”
The book remains in very good original condition for a wartime devotional carried by soldiers and families alike. Such pocket religious texts were commonly issued or sent from home to soldiers, serving both as moral guidance and as a tangible connection to loved ones during active service.
Sgt. James B. Merwin, 15th Regiment, Veterans Reserve Corps. The Veterans Reserve Corps (formerly the Invalid Corps) was composed of experienced soldiers who continued service after wounds or illness rendered them unfit for front-line duty.
A fine, intimate example of one of the most personal of all relics of the Civil War material culture – illustrating the intersection of faith, family, and military service during America’s greatest national conflict.
Comes housed in 12 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
