Description
Original Civil War Soldier’s Small Coffee Pot – Unusual Field Design
Original Civil War–era small tin coffee pot, of a compact and utilitarian form well suited for soldier use in camp or on campaign. Constructed of thin tinned sheet iron with a cylindrical body, applied handle, and sharply angled pouring spout. The pot retains its original fitted lid with a simple knob finial.
This example exhibits an unusual design, particularly in its proportions and spout construction, and concave bottom suggesting a personal or non-regulation camp item rather than a standard quartermaster-issued vessel.
Coffee was an essential ration and morale booster for Union soldiers, often prepared individually or in small mess groups using personal cookware such as this. Surviving examples of small, soldier-used coffee pots are increasingly difficult to find, especially those retaining original lids.
