Original Complete Civil War–Era Wooden Chess Set in Original Dovetailed Box
Complete Civil War–period wooden chess set, consisting of fully hand-turned light and dark pieces, housed in its original sliding-lid wooden box with dovetail construction. The pieces are classic mid-19th-century forms—kings, queens, bishops, knights, rooks, and pawns—all present and matching, turned from light and dark woods rather than stained or weighted, consistent with period manufacture.
The original box retains its sliding lid and shows honest age wear, surface marks, and handling patina expected from wartime use. Dovetail joinery and utilitarian construction indicate a purpose-made set intended for portability rather than parlor display.
Chess sets of this type were popular among Civil War soldiers and officers, used in camps, winter quarters, hospitals, and prisons as a means of mental diversion and morale. Complete surviving sets, especially those retained in their original boxes, are notably scarce.
A strong, untouched example of a wartime leisure artifact, offering a tangible connection to daily life during the American Civil War.
