Description

Philadelphia Marked Canteen “C.H. & Co. / PHIL”

Fine example by C.H. & Co., clearly stamped “C.H. & Co. / PHIL” on the pewter spout, identifying it as the work of Cornelius, Hager & Company of Philadelphia. This firm was one of several prominent Philadelphia contractors supplying tinware and canteens to the Union Army during the early years of the war.

Constructed of tinned sheet iron with concentric reinforcing rings to each face, this pattern was designed to add strength and reduce denting in service. The canteen retains its original woven cloth cover and twine strap wrapping, showing honest age and field wear consistent with long service. The pewter spout exhibits a pleasing untouched patina, with the maker’s mark remaining sharp and legible.

The bull’s-eye pattern was widely carried by Union soldiers in all theaters of the war, its distinctive ringed design becoming one of the most recognized accoutrements of the Federal infantryman.

A well-preserved and distinctly marked example from a known Civil War supplier—an excellent addition to any collection of Union accoutrements or Philadelphia Arsenal–related artifacts.
