Presentation Cane Engraved to Commemorate the Fall of Vicksburg – July 4, 1863 

 

An exceptional 19th-century presentation cane commemorating one of the Civil War’s most decisive Union victories—the surrender of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. This elegant cane features a richly engraved repoussé silver-plated handle mounted on a finely aged hardwood shaft. The handle is embellished with ornate Victorian scrollwork and floral motifs and bears several hand-engraved inscriptions honoring the principal figures associated with the Vicksburg Campaign.  

 

Visible inscriptions include “Grant,” “Pemberton,” “Vicksburg,” and the historic date “7-4-63,” memorializing the surrender of Confederate Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton to Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant after the 47-day Siege of Vicksburg. The capitulation of Vicksburg secured Union control of the Mississippi River, effectively dividing the Confederacy and standing as one of the most significant strategic victories of the war.  

 

Unlike ordinary walking canes of the period, this example was clearly intended as a commemorative piece, with its engraved names and date transforming it into a tangible remembrance of one of the defining moments of the American Civil War. The decorative embossed handle, combined with the historically significant inscriptions, makes it an outstanding display artifact for collectors of Civil War memorabilia, presentation canes, and Vicksburg-related history.  

 

The cane remains in honest, untouched condition, displaying an attractive aged patina throughout the metal handle. The hardwood shaft retains its original character with expected wear from age and use. The engraved inscriptions remain visible, though softened in places by time, adding to the piece’s authentic period appearance.
