Description

Rare Albumen Photograph of the Emancipation Memorial – Washington, D.C.

Original nineteenth-century albumen photograph depicting the famed Emancipation Memorial in Washington, D.C., published by J. F. Jarvis of 135 Penna. Ave., Washington, D.C. The image captures the iconic monument featuring Abraham Lincoln standing beside a newly freed enslaved man, one of the most recognized Reconstruction-era monuments associated with emancipation and the legacy of the Civil War.

Dedicated in 1876 in Lincoln Park, the Emancipation Memorial—also known as the Freedmen’s Memorial—was funded largely through contributions from formerly enslaved individuals and erected in honor of President Lincoln’s role in ending slavery. This early photographic view provides a striking period representation of the monument not long after its installation.

The photograph exhibits excellent composition with strong architectural detail and pleasing tonal contrast. The publisher’s imprint remains clearly visible along the lower mount edge:

“J. F. Jarvis, Publisher, 135 Penna. Ave., Washington, D.C.”

Condition is very good overall with minor edge wear, light toning, and expected age-related handling. A scarce and historically significant Reconstruction-era photographic image connecting Abraham Lincoln, emancipation, and postwar American memory.
