Description
Rare Tin Drum Confederate Canteen
Wonderful complete example of the Confederate Tin Drum Canteen. This example features all of the desired characteristics of a CS manufactured canteen. The original cotton sling with blue ticking is present as well as the cork stopper with cord. The body features one flat and one convex side, as seen on wartime examples versus militia. There is a painted inscription as well as the soldiers name incised on the reverse which has not yet been deciphered but is deep enough to discern.
Affixed to the canteen is a tag from Bob Jones collection, author on the reference book on Canteens which states: “Confederate soldered tin construction canteen. Appears to have old coat of gray paint applied, note letters “T.L.I.” on the front. No doubt C.S.A. Unit designation: “? light infantry” size: 6″x 2½” diameter 2 ½ pint capacity. Classic C.S.A. Type. Original cork and “ticking” fabric carry strap. From old Cir. 1920’s Civil War Collection, one of 6 variations in the collection. Rare example.
