Description
Regulation Civil War U.S. Belt with “Puppy Paw” Buckle, Leather Backing Stamped Boyd & Sons
A fine, completely original Civil War U.S. enlisted belt and buckle set featuring the desirable “puppy paw” style oval U.S. plate. The plate retains its classic lead-filled back, paired with the early-war twin rounded stud fasteners and single arrow hook. The face shows an attractive untouched patina consistent with field use but without abuse.
Still mounted to its period leather waist belt, the reverse leather pad retains the manufacturer’s stamp of “BOYD & SONS,” one of the major Federal contractors producing military accoutrements throughout the war. Boyd-marked leather is increasingly scarce, and complete belt rigs with both belt and plate intact are far less often encountered than loose plates.
The belt exhibits expected surface crazing, smooth wear from service, rare leather backing panel behind the plate with the Boyd makers stamp, the buckle as well likely marked but no investigation has been done as the leather panel is undisturbed. The buckle fits the belt perfectly, indicating a lifelong pairing. The arrow hook and both puppy paw studs remain firmly anchored.
This is a superior example of a Federal regulation belt rig—maker-marked, complete, untouched, and absolutely representative of the equipment carried by Union infantrymen in the field from 1861-65. Ideal for any collection of Civil War accoutrements, representative soldier’s rig.
