Remington 1858 New Model Army Revolver

 

A fine example of the iconic Remington Model 1858 New Model Army Revolver in .44 caliber, one of the most respected and widely used martial sidearms of the Civil War era. This revolver retains an attractive untouched appearance, with the steel components displaying a pleasing silver-gray patina accented by very fine darker speckling throughout. None of the original blue finish remains, though the revolver presents with an honest, well-aged surface that collectors appreciate.

 

The brass trigger guard and front sight retain a bright yellow appearance, creating excellent visual contrast against the darker metal frame and barrel. The front flat of the trigger guard is stamped with the letter “C,” while the underside of the octagonal barrel is stamped “D” just forward of the loading lever catch. The barrel is additionally marked with serial number 44936 beneath the loading lever.

 

The walnut grips exhibit a deep dark brown oil-finished appearance with a faintly visible rectangular inspector’s cartouche present on the left grip panel below the grip screw. The right grip shows several minor wood chips along with an old repaired crack running along the rear edge. The repair was skillfully stabilized long ago using three small brad tacks that remain barely noticeable and do not detract significantly from the revolver’s overall display quality.

 

There are a few small dark lines visible near the front edge of one cylinder chamber that appear to be minor service-related stress cracks from period use. Mechanically, the cylinder does not currently advance when the hammer is cocked; however, the hammer does securely engage at both the half-cock and full-cock positions.

 

Despite the noted mechanical issue, this revolver displays exceptionally well and would make an attractive and affordable addition to any Civil War firearms collection. A classic wartime sidearm with strong visual appeal and unmistakable battlefield presence.
