Description
Revolutionary War Period British Carbine Socket Bayonet
English manufacture, circa 1760–1780. A fine and representative shorter carbine pattern socket bayonet, typical of those issued for use with British and Loyalist light infantry or dragoon carbines during the American Revolution. The triangular blade measures approximately 14 inches, with an overall length of about 18 inches, and features a reinforced shoulder and short, round socket of about ⅞ inch diameter.
A distinctive armorer’s inspection mark—a small crown over broad arrow—is struck at the base of the blade near the socket, denoting British military ownership. The metal surface shows a uniform, untouched dark patina with scattered oxidation and honest period wear consistent with age and field service. Socket and mortise slot are intact, showing correct period tooling and forging seams.
This form represents the classic late-18th-century British carbine bayonet as carried by light troops, dragoons, and marine detachments throughout the American Revolutionary War. Its shorter blade length and reduced socket diameter distinguish it from the full-length Land Pattern (Brown Bess) bayonets of the same period.
