Ignatious Waterman is listed on the roster of the 9th Connecticut Line, serving in the Company of Captain Edward Bulkley. He enlisted April 28, 1777 for a three-year term.
The 9th Connecticut saw significant Revolutionary War service. The regiment first saw action at the Battle of Setauket (August 1777) under Brigadier General Samuel Holden Parsons. It was then sent to the Hudson River Valley, serving under General George Clinton following the October battles of Forts Clinton and Montgomery.
In December 1777, the regiment participated in an expedition to Long Island during which Colonel Webb was captured. The regiment wintered at West Point (1777–78) and assisted in the construction of fortifications, including what became known as the Webb redoubt.
In 1778 the regiment was attached to General James Varnum’s brigade and took part in the Battle of Rhode Island (August 29, 1778) during the Franco-American attempt to retake Newport. Though tactically indecisive, the regiment was noted for its performance.
After wintering in Rhode Island and later Morristown, New Jersey, the regiment was formally designated the 9th Connecticut Regiment. In June 1780, it participated in the Battle of Springfield, repelling a British attempt to penetrate toward the Continental Army camp at Morristown. Its winter quarters for 1780–81 were in the Hudson Valley.
Dated just months before the conclusion of the war, this May 1783 certification represents a formal acknowledgment of Continental service — likely used for land, pension, or veteran verification purposes.
A historically grounded and well-documented Revolutionary War soldier’s service document from a hard-fighting Connecticut Line regiment.
