Description
Robbins & Lawrence U.S. Model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifle
1849 Dated with Saber Bayonet Alteration
A very scarce example of the U.S. Model 1841 percussion rifle, .54 caliber, manufactured under contract by Robbins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont and lock plate dated 1849. With only 15,000 rifles produced under this contract, Robbins & Lawrence examples are among the harder-to-find variations of the Mississippi rifle.
This rifle exhibits a smooth and attractive silver-gray patina overall, never harshly cleaned. The brass buttplate is boldly stamped “US” on the tang, and though worn, a pair of faint inspector’s cartouches are still present on the flat opposite the lock.
Originally manufactured with a saber bayonet lug, this example now carries a removable saber bayonet lug adapter, serial numbered 7,385. The original front brass blade sight is absent, and the ramrod is a replacement, though well fit. These features point to its extended period of arsenal or field service, with modifications to keep the rifle in active use.
Robbins & Lawrence was awarded a government contract to supply 15,000 Model 1841 rifles, completed between 1846 and 1851. The firm was renowned for its precision machining and later gained fame for its role in producing interchangeable parts for U.S. military small arms. Many of their Mississippi rifles were subsequently altered to accept saber bayonets as military requirements evolved.
This is a particularly appealing Robbins & Lawrence Mississippi rifle, combining solid markings, an untouched silver-gray finish, and the scarce bayonet lug adapter—a clear reflection of the rifle’s long and practical military career.
