Scarce British War Wood Drum Canteen, Confederate Import
The painted face of the canteen clearly bears the “WD” (War Department) marking accompanied by the Broad Arrow government ownership stamp, along with the pre-war date, confirming official British military issue.
Constructed of turned wood with a rolled and bound edge, this style of canteen was standard British service equipment on the eve of the Crimean aftermath and Indian campaigns. With the outbreak of the American Civil War, vast quantities of surplus and newly manufactured British military stores—including canteens, accoutrements, arms, and uniforms—were exported to the Confederacy through blockade-running networks and foreign purchasing agents operating out of Great Britain.
British wood drum canteens such as this are well documented in Confederate service, particularly among early-war units and Western Theater forces where imported equipment helped offset chronic Southern manufacturing shortages. Their distinctive construction and unmistakable British government markings make them immediately identifiable and highly desirable Confederate-used imports.
This example displays strong, legible markings, a rich original blue-gray painted surface, and honest wear consistent with age and wartime use. A scarce and historically important artifact representing the international supply chain that sustained the Confederate war effort, and a standout addition to any Confederate or foreign-import Civil War collection.
