Description
Spotsylvania Battlefield Relic Group – Maker-Marked “BOYD & SONS / BOSTON”
U.S. Belt Plate with Bullets (Found Jan. 3, 1997)
A classic and highly desirable Spotsylvania Battlefield relic grouping recovered on January 3, 1997 at 10707 Gordon Road, Spotsylvania, VA, an area rich in Federal troop activity during the May 1864 fighting.
The centerpiece of the set is a scarce maker-marked U.S. belt plate:
U.S. Cartridge Box Plate – Marked “BOYD & SONS / BOSTON”
A solid dug U.S. oval plate with strong relief and an excellent dark battlefield patina. The back retains both original iron hooks, and the lead face shows the deeply stamped contractor mark:
BOYD & SONS BOSTON
Boyd & Sons was one of the most prolific Northern manufacturers of accoutrement plates during the Civil War. Maker-marked plates are significantly scarcer in dug condition and are extremely sought after by collectors.
These artifacts were recovered from ground well documented for heavy Union presence during the Spotsylvania Court House battles—especially near the shifting lines leading toward the “Mule Shoe” and “Bloody Angle.”
Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
