Description

U.S. Model 1842 Socket Bayonet

A desirable U.S. Model 1842 socket bayonet, the standard bayonet issued for use with the Model 1842 percussion musket and later carried by Federal troops throughout the Civil War. This example features a 17¾-inch triangular blade and retains the classic socket design with rotating locking ring.

The blade exhibits an attractive bright gray surface with scattered darker areas of age patina. It retains a pleasing luster throughout and is stamped “US” at the flat portion of the blade immediately below the socket. The socket displays a heavier concentration of age spotting and patina, consistent with long-term storage and honest use.

Importantly, the bayonet retains its original locking ring and screw assembly. The locking ring remains functional and moves properly, allowing the bayonet to be securely mounted as originally intended.

A solid example of one of the most recognizable U.S. military bayonets of the Civil War era, suitable for display alongside a Model 1842 musket or within an advanced collection of Civil War arms and accoutrements.

Condition: Very good. Bright gray blade with scattered patina spotting and pleasing surface luster. “US” stamp present and visible. Socket shows heavier age patina. Original locking ring and screw retained and functioning properly.
