U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword
Retailer Marked T. Horstmann, Philadelphia
With Leather Scabbard
A handsome example of the regulation U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword, retailed by T. Horstmann of Philadelphia — one of the premier military outfitters of the Civil War era.
The blade retains strong original etching, including a bold “U.S.” panel, spread-wing Federal eagle, and classic martial trophy motifs. The etched panels remain clearly visible against a pleasing, lightly aged steel surface showing honest freckling and natural patina consistent with period use.
The ricasso is retailer marked:
T. HORSTMANN / PHILADELPHIA
Horstmann was one of the largest and most respected military goods dealers in the country, supplying officers throughout the antebellum period and Civil War.
The hilt features the elegant brass half-basket guard characteristic of the Model 1850 pattern, displaying a rich, untouched mustard patina. The leather grip remains intact with original twisted wire wrap present and secure.
The sword is accompanied by its leather scabbard with brass throat, mounts, and dual suspension rings. The leather body shows age and natural curvature but remains solid and complete — a desirable survival, as many officer swords have lost their original scabbards or they suffer from age and poor handling, this is a solid and well-preserved example.
The Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword was the standard sidearm carried by Union infantry officers throughout the Civil War and continued in service for decades thereafter. Examples with strong blade etching and complete scabbards are increasingly difficult to locate in untouched condition.
A classic Civil War officer’s sword with strong eye appeal and excellent display presence.
