Description
U.S. Model 1855 Socket Bayonet (.58 Caliber)
Classic U.S. Model 1855 triangular socket bayonet designed for use with the Springfield Model 1855 rifle-musket and later Model 1861 and Model 1863 .58 caliber arms. Featuring the distinctive triangular blade and locking socket with rotating ring, this pattern became the standard bayonet carried by hundreds of thousands of Union soldiers during the Civil War. The robust triangular blade was intended for battlefield service while the offset socket allowed the bayonet to remain fixed without obstructing the musket’s sights.
This example retains an attractive untouched patina with a pleasing mix of age and originality. An iconic and instantly recognizable Civil War accoutrement, the Model 1855 socket bayonet remains one of the most essential artifacts associated with the Union infantryman and the rifle-musket that dominated the conflict.
