Description
U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Saber – Sheble & Fisher, Philadelphia
An attractive example of the U.S. Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, manufactured by Sheble & Fisher of Philadelphia — one of the smaller wartime contractors whose production was limited compared to larger firms such as Ames or Emerson & Silver.
This regulation saber features a slightly curved single-edged blade with a broad fuller extending nearly to the spear point, and a secondary narrow fuller along the spine. The ricasso is clearly marked “SHEBLE & FISHER / PHILADA” on one side. The brass three-branch guard retains a mellow, untouched patina, and the leather-wrapped grip with twisted brass wire remains well-preserved. The saber is accompanied by its original steel scabbard with twin suspension rings and an even, dark brown patina.
Issued throughout the Mexican American and Civil War, the Model 1840 “Wristbreaker.” Sabers from Sheble & Fisher are particularly desirable due to their limited contract output and fine Philadelphia craftsmanship.
A strong example of a scarce Philadelphia-made cavalry saber from one of the Union’s notable small-scale wartime contractors.
