U.S. Model 1861 Springfield Rifled Musket – Dated 1862 

 

Fine and complete example of the classic U.S. Model 1861 Springfield .58 caliber rifled musket, manufactured in 1862. The Model 1861 was the principal infantry long arm produced for Union forces during the Civil War and remains one of the most recognizable U.S. martial arms of the period.

 

The steel surfaces exhibit an attractive dark brown patina, with scattered areas of lighter gray steel showing through on the lockplate, barrel tang, and along the top of the barrel between the rear sight and rear barrel band.

 

The lockplate is crisply marked with the Federal Eagle and “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” beneath the bolster and is dated “1862” at the rear. The top of the barrel at the breech is likewise dated 1862. No visible markings remain on the left angled breech flat. Each of the three barrel bands is stamped with the letter “U,” and the “US” marking on the top of the butt plate remains clear and visible.

 

The original rear sight and both sling swivels remain intact. The musket also retains its original tulip-tipped ramrod with the characteristic swell.

 

Mechanically, the lock remains in full working order with a crisp spring, and the hammer securely holds in both the half-cock and full-cock positions.

 

The walnut stock is complete and in fine condition, displaying honest age and wear with only minor dings and scratches along with a few very sparse white paint speckles. Two oval inspector’s cartouches are visible on the left side of the stock above the trigger guard. Tiny “U.L.” initials are also stamped into the underside of the stock just behind the trigger guard.

 

A fine, complete example of the U.S. Model 1861 Springfield Rifled Musket—the iconic infantry long arm most closely associated with the Union soldier of the American Civil War. An excellent addition to a Civil War or U.S. martial arms collection.
