Description

Union Federal Enlisted Kepi

Excellent example of a Civil War Federal enlisted man’s kepi, constructed of deep indigo-blue wool broadcloth with a leather visor and chinstrap secured by period Infantry “I” service buttons likey replaced or period altered by warrant officer such as hospital steward etc. The body retains its classic low-crown profile, typical of late-war issue headgear, showing expected field and storage wear consistent with genuine period use.

The interior features its original brown polished cotton lining and remnants of the leather sweatband, showing honest age and service patina. Partial makers label remains with “G”.  The hat was a product of the Murphy and Griswold firm.

The kepi’s stiff leather visor and chinstrap retain excellent form, while the wool body remains strong and pliable with only minor surface wear. This example perfectly captures the look and feel of the standard-issue cap worn by thousands of Union soldiers during the conflict.

A quintessential piece of Civil War field gear, representing the everyday soldier of the Union army with exceptional originality and character.
