Virginia State Seal Two-Piece Button by Horstmann & Allien
Fine two-piece gilt brass Virginia State Seal button featuring the standing figure of Virtus above the fallen tyrant, surrounded by the state motto “Sic Semper Tyrannis.” The reverse bears the desirable Horstmann & Allien backmark and retains its original shank.
Horstmann & Allien operated in Philadelphia during the antebellum period and supplied military goods, uniforms, and buttons to militia organizations throughout the United States. Virginia state seal buttons of this pattern were worn by Virginia militia units and state organizations prior to and during the Civil War era.
This example displays exceptional original gilt with crisp details throughout the seal design. The reverse mark is sharp and clearly legible, adding to its collector appeal. The button remains in excellent condition with no significant damage and an intact shank.
