13th New York Infantry Maltese Cross, Carved From Wooden Confederate Capitol Flagstaff, Richmond 1865. Maltese Cross measures 1.5 square, .375 inches deep, and features a small "13" at its center. The 13th New York was among the Union regiments that entered Richmond on April 3, 1865. Lt. Colonel John De Peyster, of the 13th New York, is the man credited with raising the first Union Flag over Confederate Richmond, and this carved Maltese cross is a souvenir of that triumphant moment.
