1/6th plate tintype of a seated Union soldier, bearded, and wearing a jacket with wool epaulettes. In an effort to clothe the volunteers of 1861, many northern states adopted short jackets for their recruits, and states such as New York and Illinois continued to clothe many of their soldiers in distinctive “state jackets” throughout the war. The image has very good clarity and contrast and is housed in a copper mat.
