1834 Light Infantry "Eagle" Cap Plate for 1832 US Army Shako - Inventory Number: INS 214 / SOLD
Beautiful original example with fine detail. Constructed of die struck brass with gold gilt finish. Complete with both attaching loops on back.
When new army caps were announced in 1832, adjusted in 1833 and finally issued is 1834, both French and British influence was apparent in the design of the cylindrical headgear and ornamentation. On the shako, just beloe the plume or "pompon" was this standard 3" eagle. It gained popularity and was worn by both sides in the early half of the Civil War as evidenced by period photos.
