    1862 Dated Springfield Rifle Musket - Inventory Number: RIF 084  / SOLD 

    Original Model 1861 U.S. Percussion Rifle-Musket is in very good condition overall. Made by the Springfield Armory.

    A .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader dated 1862, this longarm is in very good condition overall. Barrel has a smooth grey patina Breech date is partially visible as are the “VP” and eaglehead marks.   The rifle musket retains the original two-leaf rear sight. Lockplate is nicely stamped with a spreadwinged eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” motif in front of the hammer and a strong, sharp “1862” date stamped behind the hammer. Mechanics are good. Bore is clean with only light dirt and will clean up to bright. Rifling is good.

    Black walnut stock is sound with the soldier initials “H.L.” on the stock cheek.  The inspector’s cartouche is present, stock is in good condition overall with just normal dings, nicks and scratches from age and use.

    The weapon has the original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod with threads at opposite end that are good.

    Musket is complete and retains its original iron nose cap, iron nipple and bolster screw, barrel bands, sling swivels, and buttplate.

    A very attractive example of the standard Civil War infantry weapon.
