Unique set of 3 carved shield shaped folk art plaques. The “Maine” plaque bears the name of 19th Maine Infantry veteran John M. Wellington, along with the names of 3 sons each followed by their Sons of Union Veterans affiliation. Underneath is a bold “GAR / S of UV” carved into the face of the shield, with crossed muskets and “1861 1865.” A second shield is decorated with an American Eagle over crossed cannons and “S. of UV.” Above this is the name and Camp number (Camp 14, Maine) of one of the sons. The last plaque bears the name and S of UV affiliation of Mrs. John M. Wellington as past president of the auxiliary. This appears over the emblem of the “Aux. of S. of U.V.” One bears the period pencil inscription on the back identifying the maker as Elden Bowell of Bradstreet Camp 14, Maine and is dated 1937. Per family history the maker was the young grandson of the 19th Maine Infantry veteran. A unique piece of Civil War veteran memorabilia.
