Beautiful original 23mm version of the Civil War Confederate Navy button. This is the style with the anchor in the center above 2 crossed cannons. Below the anchor and cannon are the letters "CN" for Confederate States Navy. The face of the button is near mint. The backmark is "COURTNEY & TENNENT CHARLESTON S.C" a firm that imported a variety of products from England. The shank is perfectly intact on the reverse of the button. This is the pattern listed as figure CS55 in Albert's button book and CSN210A1 in Tice's button book. Tice tells of how this pattern is “...one of the most popular with collectors." He adds that of the three sizes, this "23mm example is by far the most difficult to find. Commander George Tarry Sinclair purchased many of these buttons from Gilbert M. Tennent for expected us on the C.S.S. Texas.". It would be impossible to improve on this example.
Comes housed in a display case with red velvet backing and descriptive card.
