Abraham Lincoln Stevengraph Mourning Ribbon – Inventory Number: POL 365 / SOLD

After the assassination of the President, mourning ribbons commemorating his death were very popular. This silk ribbon features an image of Lincoln in the center. Above his image is a spread-winged eagle over a patriotic shield. Below image reads, “THE LATE LAMENTED PRESIDENT LINCOLN”. Under this are crossed U.S. flags. Wording at top reads, “ASSASINATED AT WASHINGTON 14 APRIL 1865. I HAVE SAID NOTHING BUT WHAT I AM WILLING TO LIVE BY, AND IF IT BE THE PLEASURE OF ALMIGHTY GOD, TO DIE BY. A. LINCOLN”. The ribbon is in great condition with nice coloring.

Thomas Stevens introduced the weaving of colored silk bookmarks and other decorative items in England around 1862. They quickly became an international fad in last half of the century and were made by several firms in the U.S. The bottom reverse is marked “T. STEVENS / COVENTRY”

Comes housed in 12 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
