Scarce albumen photograph of a dead Confederate soldier in the muddy trenches of Fort Mahone outside of Petersburg, Virginia. The photograph was taken on April 3, 1865 by T.C. Roche, the day after Union forces broke through Robert E. Lee’s defensive lines around the city. The albumen is mounted on piece of 9” by 8” cardstock. On the reverse are two smaller albumen photographs of a large three-mast naval ship and piles of artillery shells next to two large naval guns.
