Ames 1862 Artillery Saber - Inventory Number: SWO 264 / SOLD
Wonderful example of an early war dated Ames Model 1840 Artillery Saber. Termed as an Ames Type 2, this variation was made from 1860 through 1865 and features a saber that has a flush handguard on the blade side without a recess and its matching scabbard has a throat collar mount similar to the M1860 cavalry model. Blade and scabbard are both in very good condition. Made for light artillery (mounted units), this edged weapon was delivered in 1862.
Obverse ricasso clearly stamped "US / ADK / 1862" while the reverse ricasso bears the address markings of "AMES MFg Co / CHICOPEE / MASS". This saber has a 32 ¼" long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top and a single wide fuller. Blade is in excellent condition and exhibits a lightly cleaned gray bright sheen with a smooth gray color. The original leather washer pad is strong and intact. Blade edge bears no nicks. Brass pommel has a 3/8" high. The entire brass hilt, including the pommel has a bright brass patina. Original grip, strong and tight, consists of a turned, wooden handle with seventeen grooves wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled with original, twisted, brass wire wrap. Leather is in exemplary condition.
The steel scabbard has been cleaned and exhibits a smooth, bright sheen overall and is in very fine condition with one small dent 7" up from the drag. No. 1 stamped on the drag. The bands are tight and hold two 1½" OD sword suspension rings. Throat unmarked. This fine M1840 artillery saber specimen is a true wartime artifact of the Civil War and would make an outstanding addition to any edged weapons collection.
