Ames Model 1840 Cavalry Saber, Dated 1852 - Inventory Number: SWO 233 / SOLD
Model 1840 “wristbreaker” cavalry saber made by Ames Manufacturing Company of Cabotville, Massachusetts, one of 1,450 delivered in 1852. One side of the ricasso bears the clear marking “AMES MFG. CO / CABOTVILLE / 1852”, with “US / A.D.K.” on the opposite. The blade is bright with very light, scattered pitting overall. The forward half of the edge has an old field sharpening with a few nicks. The brass guard is in great condition with a mellow, uncleaned patina. The leather grip is in very good condition, with the twisted brass wire wrap missing beyond the pommel. The original leather washer is intact around the ricasso. The scabbard remains in very good condition with a smooth, even, dark brown patina overall. Overall, a nice representative example of a classic Civil War edged weapon.
